Social Justice Committee

We are beginning to return to in-person (vaccinated, appropriately distanced) but HYBRID meetings. Attendees will bring their own zoom-capable devices instead of relying on a single screen or owl technology. This approach, we hope, will allow the intersection of Zoom connection and personal interaction to move the needle back toward the community experiences many of us have been missing, while continuing to provide access for those who cannot...Read more...

S'chach Gathering

We were delighted to be able to gather in the sukkah this sukkot after an attenuated observance in 2020.  We are lucky to live in southern California with a climate similar to Israel so we can build our sukkah as our compatriots in Israel and probably our ancestors in ancient times did with palm fronds for s’chach (covering of the sukkah).  For many years a group of congregants has trekked out a few days before the holiday to...Read more...

Note from Melissa Levy

This High Holy Day season, PJTC strove to engage and make meaning with all who wished to participate, regardless of their ability or inclination to come through our physical doors. And what an adventure we had together! Hundreds of you came in person for services, while hundreds more chose to pray with us online. Over 250 people joined us at the Arboretum for Tashlich and family services. In addition to our annual meal together in PJTC's...Read more...

Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center is so lucky to be part of a local Federation that is not only invested in our community’s present, it is also heavily invested in our future! When PJTC indicated that we wanted to update the ways our vibrant community can access services and programs offered, the Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys’s Board of Governors awarded us with $10,500!

We are so grateful to the...Read more...

A Letter from Cantor Ruth: My Sabbatical

Dear PJTC Community,

I hope this letter finds you safe and healthy. As you probably noticed, the past 19 months have been incredibly intense and a tremendous opportunity for learning and growing, for our world, our community and ourselves. As part of my sabbatical (a total of six months split over three years) , I spent the first two months of 2020 learning in...Read more...

Social Justice Committee: L’Shanah Tova!

My parents used to say that the weather changed after Yom Kippur. Summer ended, autumn began.  Winter coats came out of storage. We boxed our Hawaiian Shirts—well, ok, we didn’t know what a Hawaiian shirt was in those days. It is clear though that in the rhythm of our lives—physical and spiritual--the space between Sukkot and Simchat Torah is the time to prepare to decompress from the past year and begin...Read more...

Board Report : September '21

The board met on September 23. It was a hybrid meeting -- with some members attending in person on Katz Terrace and others attending via Zoom. After Melissa Levy led traditional Sukkot blessings, Andrea Mark gave a presentation and introduction to PJTC's newly created mission statement she and her task force developed. After a motion was made to approve the mission statement, and after discussion, the motion passed. The board then...Read more...

Kvelling Over Rabbi Aimee's Mad Working-Mom Skills Witnessed During Rosh Hashanah Service Live Stream

For anyone who was at or watching the live stream of PJTC's Rosh Hashanah day 2 morning service...living Rabbi Aimee's stressful mom-moment along with her...we are sure you felt her struggle and admired her ability to parent and "rabbi" (not really a verb) at the same time. We realized after the holiday that this was an experience that needed to be shared beyond the community that supported her efforts during the...Read more...

PJTC featured in Pasadena Now: Yom Kippur Article

Publication "Pasadena Now" made mention of PJTC's services in their Yom Kippur article yesterday, as a key provider of High Holy Day online services options for the Pasadena area. We were so pleased to be able to safely hold in-person services for our members this year, and continue the practice of streaming services for members at home, the larger Pasadena community, and the even larger Jewish community as well. We agree with Rabbi...Read more...

An Ode To Simchat Torah: Favorite Torah Portions

Torah Discussion Starter: Judaism Is No Mystery

There is so much to be learned from Torah, but Parashah Zitzavim has been my favorite for years - and I know I’m not the only one. Our sages loved it so much, they included it as a reading on Yom Kippur. What grabs my attention are these lines in Deuteronomy 30:11-20: “Surely, this Instruction which I enjoin upon you this day is not too baffling for you, nor is it beyond reach…No, the thing is very close to...Read more...

We are beginning our 2021-2022 Torah Fund campaign.  Since last year was challenging in many ways for Torah Fund; especially in the distribution of the pins, Women’s League will be continuing with the same theme as last year.  The pins will also remain the same.

Once again, this year’s theme is B’Yachad, which means Together.  It signifies the joy of...Read more...
