We are beginning to return to in-person (vaccinated, appropriately distanced) but HYBRID meetings. Attendees will bring their own zoom-capable devices instead of relying on a single screen or owl technology. This approach, we hope, will allow the intersection of Zoom connection and personal interaction to move the needle back toward the community experiences many of us have been missing, while continuing to provide access for those who cannot take the chance of Covid exposure that continues to take its toll. Upcoming meetings at 10:00 a.m. Sundays: October 31, November 14, November 21, December 5 and December 19. Zoom at: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89492111158
Any day now expect the new brochure announcing the call for nominations for the Rabbi Marvin Gross Social Justice Award. Please be thinking of those who exemplify the devotion and action to achieve social justice. The award includes a plaque on display with the magnificent Brian Mark sculpture in the lobby plus $500 to be donated to the nonprofit of the awardee’s choice.
The MLK Shabbat service on January 14 will feature the Urban Voices Chorus performing songs and relating stories of the challenges the members have confronted navigating poverty, homelessness and disability.
SJC continues to take action at the local and national levels. 2022 will be a year of contentious elections, voter suppression, and challenges to justice. The SJC will be organizing a variety of approaches to support social justice issues at a time when climate action, voting rights, immigration, and other fraught issues are at a tipping point.
We work in conjunction with other organizations to increase our impact, and one area in which we are taking a new direction is in helping landlords better understand and benefit from the system of government support for renters. If you own residential rental property or know someone who does, please contact me to discuss this program as it develops to meet real needs.
Please give me a call or text at (626) 616-5190 for more information about the Social Justice Committee—or email sjcpjtc@gmail.com.
