March 27 was the final board meeting of the current board of directors, headed by President Stacey Sharp. During the meeting, Alan Whitman provided an update on the L’Dor V’Dor (“LDVD”) fund, explaining its background and investment activities, including its financial performance. Whitman addressed various board and congregant questions and concerns. Next, treasurer and incoming president Jack Singer reported that a long-pending audit of our shul's finances was completed, and uncovered no financial impropriety, including no misappropriations, by any synagogue official, although it identified some areas of potential improvement in our bookkeeping practices. Singer also presented the financial report for this month, detailing projected cash flow for May and June. Finally, Singer provided background on the following proposed improvements to our campus, from the LDVD “set aside” fund:
1. Wohlmann Hall Roof Replacement - $13,605
2. Wohlmann Hall Roof Asbestos Abatement – $67,950
3. Replace LBSRS Flooring - $43,100
4. Backflow Valve Repair and Protective Cage Install - $13,000
5. Cottage Rain and Vine Damage Repair - $10,000
6. Weizmann Building Rain Repair - $8,200 (Work Completed).
The board approved these expenditures, and also authorized the annual transfer of interest and dividends from the LDVD Fund into our synagogue's general account, in the amount of $165,094.
Sharp announced the appointment of Nancy Carlton as the new chair of our synagogue’s Aesthetics Committee. Following an introduction by Sean Surfas, head of the interim rabbi search committee, per the committee's recommendation, the board authorized the synagogue to enter into negotiations with Rabbi Ben Goldstein to serve as interim rabbi for a one-year term. Also, the board approved a new 10-year contract for Cantor Ruth Berman Harris, who signed the agreement.
Finally, Sharp and Singer installed the incoming board of directors of the synagogue and LDVD, respectively. Words of encouragement and appreciation were shared, including valedictory remarks by Sharp and a blessing by Cantor Berman Harris, followed by Havdalah and cake.
