Who knew that joining a community of Jewish women could make such a difference in the lives of so many others, as well as your own?
A common mission of all Sisterhoods has always been to serve as a support group to the host congregation. However, the old stereotype of women relegated to anonymous, tedious kitchen duty is so outdated. If this is your image of Sisterhood in 2022, you have missed the dynamic and exciting changes and growth that have energized our organization. In recent years, our Sisterhood members have worked and played equally hard together.
Various fundraising and friendraising programs which benefit our PJTC community include the New Years Greeting & Membership Directory, Challah and Baked Goods sale, Misloach Manot Purim greetings and goody bags, hamentaschen bake for the Purim carnival and Megillah reading as well as care packages to our college students away from home for the first time.
Sisterhood also supports organizations in the local community, hosting a dessert reception for one of the Jewish Federation Book Festival events and providing a monthly luncheon for Friends in Deed Women’s Room. On a national level, our Torah Fund campaign raises money for the education of rabbis, cantors and lay leaders in the Conservative movement.
For spiritual growth we meet monthly for Rosh Chodesh programs. Sisterhood hosts a special annual Shabbat service as well.
Of course, we also provide refreshments and treats as well as participate in meal preparations for many temple occasions! Recently Sisterhood members prepared a dairy dinner featuring four different pastas for PJTC’s Simcha Torah celebration. We were also happy to prepare condiments and salads for the Community Havdalah and New Member BBQ.
As a Sisterhood member you have the opportunity to participate at whatever level suits you. Some can offer only financial support while others are able to volunteer their time as well. Some events require minimal commitments, perhaps only a couple of hours. Other tasks can be completed in the convenience of your home, if that is your preference. If you have greater aspirations, Sisterhood offers leadership positions within our organization.
